Info:

The title Disco Beldi carries several layers of meaning and reflects Chez Ali’s experience of growing up between different cultures. “Disco” refers both to the Spanish word for “record” and to the album’s more dance-oriented ambitions. “Beldi”, an Arabic word meaning homemade or authentic, describes how influences ranging from 70s disco and 80s Arabic pop to 90s and 2000s R&B and contemporary indie have been distilled into something uniquely his own.

The album began taking shape after a honeymoon in the summer of 2023, but the journey towards Disco Beldi was far from straightforward. Along the way, circumstances changed several times. One studio was converted into a bomb shelter and disappeared, life took unexpected turns, and a growing urge emerged to start over from scratch. Unlike previous projects, Chez Ali initially chose to work in greater isolation. What first felt unfamiliar and lonely gradually became a source of freedom, a chance to explore new ideas, push boundaries, and follow creative instincts that might previously have remained unrealised. While the album represents a clear artistic development, it is not about becoming someone else. Rather, it is about becoming more comfortable with what was already there.

Consisting of eight carefully selected tracks, Disco Beldi moves between the dancefloor and melancholy, between expansive arrangements and stripped-back moments. The songs carry traces of both time and personal growth, allowing every detail to find its natural place. It is an album that does not try to be one thing, but instead reflects the way life actually feels, fluid, shifting, and full of contrasts. The hope is that listeners will recognise themselves in those movements, whether through joy, longing, or uncertainty.

With Disco Beldi, Chez Ali is not signalling a new direction so much as a deeper exploration of what has always been at the heart of the project. The personal, playful, and sincere elements have long been present in his music; here, they are simply given more space than ever before, without compromise.
